Description
Each year 75,000 people die from healthcare-acquired infections. Many of us know infection control is the first directive for all providers, but what you may not realize is that home-based primary care presents unique infection risks. Precautions must be taken to prevent putting patients, family members, caregivers, and providers at risk for infection.
Objectives
In this course, you will identify the infection risks associated with home-based primary care and review mitigation strategies that can be implemented before, during, and after a home visit. Upon completion, you will be able to do the following:
- Recognize general infection risks providers may encounter in the home and how they can impact patients, family member and providers.
- Describe infection risks that require special considerations including multi-drug resistant organisms and bed bugs.
- Apply strategies to minimize infection risks including provider behaviors, contraindications to house calls, and infection control programs.

In order to earn credit for participation in this activity, the learner must complete a 5-question post-test with a passing score of 80% or better with unlimited attempts.
Intended Audience
This course is intended for all home-based primary care (HBPC) providers, including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, and other health professionals.
