Pdf Summary
The "Relational Leadership: Building Strong Teams and Culture in Home Based Care" webinar held on March 17, 2021, by HCCIntelligence™ aimed to educate participants on the Relational Leadership Framework, characteristics of high-functioning teams, and the importance of psychological safety. The session was presented by Kari Mader, MD, MPH, and Kyle Turner, PharmD, both trainers for Primary Care Progress.

Key objectives included discussing the relational leadership framework, identifying high-functioning team characteristics, and defining psychological safety alongside its benefits. The webinar emphasized that to drive significant system changes, small relational changes are essential.

Relational leadership focuses on cultivating genuine relationships to achieve a shared vision and collaborative action. Central domains of relational leadership were highlighted, emphasizing the necessity of combining skills, knowledge, and mindset.

High-performing teams are marked by shared power, diversity, clear structure, trust, and a growth mindset. These teams co-create goals, value diverse talents, have defined roles and norms, encourage openness, and approach conflicts with problem-solving attitudes.

Psychological safety, defined by Amy Edmondson as "a shared belief that the team is safe for interpersonal risk-taking," was explored in-depth. Psychological safety includes feeling safe to learn, share, challenge, and participate without fear of negative consequences. Benefits of psychological safety include encouraging open dialogue, supporting analytical thinking, enabling productive conflict, facilitating error reporting, fostering innovation, and increasing accountability.

Strategies to foster psychological safety involve practicing vulnerability, inviting feedback, acknowledging mistakes, and making space for listening. Teams should actively engage in soliciting feedback, openly discussing errors, and welcoming improvements.

In addition, the webinar offered virtual office hours for participants to ask questions and engage with experts, including Paul Chiang, MD, and Brianna Plencner, CPC, CPMA. Resources from HCCIntelligence such as webinars, tools, and tip sheets were also made available for ongoing support.
