Pdf Summary
The document is a summary of a webinar presented by Cheryl Fattibene, focused on leading teams during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond. The objectives revolve around assessing current practices and team members using the Joy in Work framework to identify burnout, developing a team-based care approach during a crisis, and determining which practices to keep or discard post-crisis.

The IHI Joy in Work Framework is emphasized for tracking and implementing changes through Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA Cycles). Organizational assessments cover identifying team members, tracking PPE availability, staff safety, and preventing burnout, which has been exacerbated by the pandemic.

Burnout, defined by chronic stress leading to physical and emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and feelings of ineffectiveness, has had profound impacts on healthcare professionals. Pre-pandemic statistics noted that over half of U.S. physicians and nurses were experiencing substantial burnout symptoms, with serious personal consequences like depression, substance abuse, and higher suicide rates.

During COVID-19, exacerbating factors include long hours, high turnover, safety concerns, and increased team discord. Burnout negatively affects medical errors, patient satisfaction, and quality of care. Therefore, developing high-performing teams is crucial, characterized by a common goal, commitment, clear communication, and constructive conflict.

Effective teamwork involves respecting all roles, explicit responsibilities, and understanding how each role fits within the team. The culture should focus on patient-centered care, teamwork, evidence-based practice, and continuous quality improvement.

Further strategies include optimizing teams by ensuring all members work to their highest expertise, cross-training, and redesigning roles for efficiency. Regularly measuring outcomes like workflow efficiency, team satisfaction, and use of standing orders help track improvements.

Moving beyond crisis involves maintaining a team-based care model, practicing self-compassion, maintaining a mission focus, and fostering resilience. Improved communication, a supportive environment, and the elimination of negative practices are key to sustaining effective healthcare teams.
