Pdf Summary
Teaming is a deliberate and intentional process that requires effort to build and sustain effective teams. Research has shown that teams make better decisions and achieve better outcomes compared to individuals working alone. This toolkit introduces the concepts of teaming and psychological safety to create inclusive and equitable teams.

Teaming focuses on building individual team members' tactical and process skills to support the overall progress of team development. It involves developing skills such as meeting management, organizational, and structural skills. Teaming is necessary in dynamic work environments to promote institutional learning and growth.

Psychological safety is a crucial aspect of high-functioning teams. It refers to a shared belief that the team is safe for interpersonal risk-taking. It involves creating safe and inclusive spaces where all team members feel comfortable expressing their opinions, admitting mistakes, asking questions, and challenging the status quo. Psychological safety can be broken down into stages of safety of inclusion, safety to learn, safety to contribute, and safety to challenge the status quo.

Strong teams possess characteristics such as valuing diversity, shared power, clear structures, trust, and a growth mindset. These characteristics contribute to psychological safety and improve work culture. Building psychological safety requires creating a foundation of exploration, making space to listen, inviting feedback, and amplifying voices.

To increase psychological safety, action steps can include establishing a foundation of exploration, making space to listen, inviting feedback, and amplifying voices. It is also important to develop team norms, use common language and frameworks, and understand the stages of team development according to Tuckman's model (forming, storming, norming, performing, adjourning/transforming). This understanding can guide preventions and interventions to support team development.

Overall, fostering psychological safety and effective teaming can lead to greater team success, satisfaction, and improved outcomes.
