Pdf Summary
The Home Centered Care Institute’s webinar on “2022 Coding & Policy Impacts” outlined key updates and strategies for home-based providers and practices in response to the CY 2022 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) Final Rule. The session, presented by Dr. Paul Chiang and Brianna Plencner, focused on significant coding, reimbursement, and policy changes, including impacts on home and domiciliary Evaluation and Management (E/M) codes, care management services, telehealth, and virtual care.

Key updates included:
1. **E/M Codes and Payment Impacts**: The conversion factor for these codes faced potential pay cuts averaging 3-4%. However, new legislation (S. 610) mitigated these cuts by delaying the 2% Medicare sequester and increasing the Medicare physician payment schedule by 3% for one year.

2. **Care Management Services Enhancements**: Notable changes include increased reimbursement for Chronic Care Management (CCM) and the introduction of Principal Care Management (PCM) codes, enhancing payments for both traditional and complex care management services.

3. **Telehealth Policies**: During the Public Health Emergency (PHE), telehealth flexibilities remain in place. Post-PHE, telehealth will mainly apply to mental health services provided in the home, with additional requirements for in-person visits within specific intervals.

4. **Remote Therapeutic Monitoring (RTM)**: New codes and guidelines were introduced for RTM, including requirements for a minimum of 16 days of data collection and defined treatment plans.

5. **Vaccine Administration**: Increased payment rates for specific vaccines and continuation of additional payments when COVID-19 vaccines are administered in-home under certain conditions.

6. **ICD-10 Coding Updates**: New codes address post-COVID-19 conditions, social determinants of health, and other specific health issues.

7. **Physician Assistant (PA) Practice Scope**: From January 1, 2022, PAs are allowed to bill Medicare directly and incorporate with fellow PAs for billing services.

Furthermore, the webinar highlighted electronic prescribing mandates starting January 1, 2021, except for specific exceptions and compliance timelines, and underscored resources such as the HCCIntelligence Resource Center for ongoing education and support.
